What is included in brake service?

Our technicians start every service with a bumper-to-bumper safety inspection to understand the overall health of your vehicle and where there may be areas of concern. With that background, they then do an in-depth test of your brakes to understand what’s happening and what’s needed.  The core test for pads and rotors is to measure their depth and how evenly they are wearing. Brake pads generally need replacement between 3mm and 4mm in thickness although with even wear, some people let them go as low as 2mm, but that’s the bare minimum.  Depending on the results we will either recommend monitoring (and how much longer they are likely to last) or a replacement of the pads and/or the rotors if that’s warranted now.  The primary objective is first to make sure the vehicle will keep you safe and secondarily to avoid unnecessary expenses now and in the future. We take the long-term view.

Why do brake pads and rotors matter?

It goes without saying that there’s nothing more important to your driving safety than being able to break quickly and consistently.

The brakes on your car are actually very similar to disc brakes on a bike. Slowing and stopping is the result of friction between the pads and the rotors. Over time, these two elements wear down, which can reduce your ability to brake quickly and consistently. It can also cause annoying squeaks and screeching sounds.

Regular maintenance doesn’t just keep you safe, it can save time over the long-term because it can ensure that your brakes are wearing evenly which increases your pad and rotor lifespan. Maintain your brakes in Washington, DC traffic with frequent inspections and repairs. Catching a problem early often makes it less expensive and easier to fix, and extends the lifespan of your brake system.

How do I know if I need brake service?

A good rule of thumb is that brake pads need to be replaced every 10,000 to 20,000 miles and rotors should be replaced every 50,000 to 70,000 miles.  Of course, driving style plays a big part in how long brake pads and rotors last.

Beyond this mileage, you should have your brakes checked if you have any of these symptoms: high-pitched screeching when you apply the brakes, your steering wheel vibrates when you are braking, grinding noises when you break – this could mean that your pads have completely worn through. You can see more details at this article on brakes.

What else should I know about my brakes?

There’s no getting around brake pads and rotors wearing out. Especially for stop-start driving that’s hard to avoid in the Washington DC region. However, you can certainly give your brakes a break (sorry, how could we not?) by doing what you can to avoid sudden stops and starts.  Anticipate where you’ll need to stop and ease off the accelerator early. Side benefit: better gas mileage.
