Why do Catalytic Converters matter?

Catalytic converters prevent your vehicle from spewing toxic emissions into the air. They turn these noxious gasses into carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. Their widespread use has drastically reduced harmful air pollution saving thousands of lives and making our cities more livable. They are also required by law and need to be in good working order to pass your emissions test.

How do I know if I need to replace my catalytic converter?

There are four giveaways that you may need to replace your catalytic converter.  If you notice any of these four issues you should have a mechanic take a look: 1) You hear a rattling sound that’s caused by metals inside the device starting to break apart, 2) It gives off a sulfur smell (think rotten egg) which is a sign that it’s not converting toxins into safer substances, 3) It is discolored or warped which can happen if it’s overheating, and 4) Your check engine light is on. This could be a variety of things including an issue with your catalytic converter.

Oh, also, if it’s missing! There’s been a massive increase in catalytic converters being stolen from vehicles. They are being stolen for their precious metals that are – ounce for ounce – more valuable than gold.  A lot of noise and smoke is a clear sign that your catalytic converter has been stolen.

What else should I know about catalytic converters?

Catalytic converters feel the need for speed. In all seriousness, lots of slow, stop-start driving (most of our commutes) can cause deposits to build up. Running your car at higher speeds – within typical highway speed limits –  for several miles can help burn off those deposits. To help with this, while driving at highway speeds, you should take your foot off the accelerator for a moment and then resume driving. Repeat this a few times. Of course, make sure that you drive safely while doing this.
