How EV Maintenance Varies from Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicles
When it comes to maintenance, there are some key differences between traditional vehicles (also known as ICEs for their internal combustion engines) and electric vehicles (EVs). While there’s no need for an oil change, other components on an electric vehicle may require maintenance at the same or more frequent intervals than those with a combustion engine.
Weight
Electric vehicles can weigh 30% more than standard cars, meaning that they often have more wear and tear on the components (like axles and tires) that support that weight. The battery pack alone inside of an electric GMC Hummer weighs more than the entirety of a Honda Civic. Conversely, because ICEs are powered by chemical reactions, there are more air-filled components within these cars, making them easier to propel forward–and to stop.
EVs may need more frequent replacement of brake pads or alignment services due to the weight of heavy components like the battery pack, power inverter, electric motor. When force is exerted overtime on the frame of your vehicle, it can begin to pull you left or right as opposed to driving in the direction you are directing it. Getting an alignment every 6 months ensures that the tires are consistently pointing where you are steering. Likewise, consistent force applied to your brakes wears the padding down that allows you to come to a gentle stop.
Fluids
EVs have significantly fewer fluids to keep up with compared to those with combustion engines. Even though motor oil is not a component of their routine maintenance, these cars still need regular top-offs of: coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, wiper fluid, and power-steering fluid if necessary.
