Getting the Best Deal at the Mechanic

When it comes to auto repair and service, many people are skeptical about pricing and afraid that they will, for lack of a better term, get ripped off. At CarCare To Go, we think the best customer is an informed customer. To that end, we’re sharing a few of our best tips on how to make sure you are getting the best value for your dollar at the service center.

    Know Your Vehicle

It would be impractical to suggest that every car owner read their manual cover to cover. That being said, it’s important to understand the basics about your vehicle. For starters, what is your car’s make, model, and year of manufacture? This may seem simple, but many people mistake their exact model or year of their car. Because parts and accessories are made custom depending on the make and model, every car owner should know these basics:

    • Have a basic understanding of the maintenance schedule suggested for your car by the manufacturer; how often you need an oil change, when your fluids should be checked and when your tires need to be rotated can all be varied depending on your car. Being familiar with your car’s maintenance schedule will make it easier for you to identify which recommendations are required by the manufacturer.
    • That sticker on your windshield may say you need an oil change every 3,000 miles, but modern vehicles rarely need oil changes that often. For example, Jaguars have extremely long oil change intervals at 15,000 miles, while some Hyundais and Kias with turbo engines (engines that need non synthetic oil) need an oil change closer to every 5,000 miles.

Arming yourself with this basic knowledge will go a long way not only for your wallet, but will also ensure your car is well taken care of based on its unique needs.

Warranty vs Non-Warranty vs Service Contracts

If your car is newer, there is a chance that some service items are covered under your car’s warranty. This means when choosing a service provider, you should ensure that they are certified and able to honor that warranty – otherwise you might be paying for service that should be no cost to you!

    • While service contracts/extended warranties can in some cases offer you peace of mind when it comes to servicing and repairing your car, it is extremely important to know (in writing) what is and isn’t covered – you don’t want to be surprised the next time you need a big repair and find out there’s a loophole in your contract and you’re on the hook for the full amount.

Preventative Maintenance: Pay Now, Save Later

It seems counterintuitive to suggest you spend more on car maintenance in order to save, but ask the person who is stuck with a bill to replace a gasket or even their entire engineafter their engine seizes up because of forgone oil changes, and they will surely convince you of the power of preventative maintenance.

When evaluating what preventative maintenance to get, refer back to that trusty owner’s manual to make sure your oil, fluids, and tires are taken care of at regular intervals to prevent sky high repair bills later on.

    And finally…

    Get It In Writing

One of the most important things to ask the service advisor for when getting your vehicle serviced is a written estimate. This estimate should break down the different costs between diagnostics, parts, and labor, and it should ideally reflect the recommended service in a way that lets you make decisions on what’s needed today, versus what can be done at a later date.

Your service advisor should contact you after their inspection and before any work is done with a written estimate and their clear recommendations on what you need and why. This will help you make informed decisions and ensure there aren’t any surprise or hidden fees that will cause a headache (or an achy wallet!) down the road.

Even if you only remember a few of these tips, arming yourself with more knowledge will make taking car of your car a less stressful experience. As always, we’re here to demystify car ownership and eliminate the hassle of car service altogether. Book today to see what the hype is all about – we’d love the chance to earn your business.

When the "maintenance required" notice appeared on the dashboard, I knew just what to do. I went to carcaretogo.com and made an appointment for my car. It was easy as pie. Next day, a fine young man appeared at my front door at the appointed time, took my car keys, took some pictures of the car, placed a plastic sheet over the driver's side and a paper mat for the floor and off he went. Fifteen minutes later, an email arrived that the car had arrived and was in process. Later, a different young man called to let me know about the work. We spoke and agreed, then signed off. An email invoice arrived, I keyed in my information and it was done. Several hours later, I received another email that the car would arrive at the front door at 6 pm. Sure as rain, he arrived, took some pictures and delivered the car, clean as a whistle. Thanks to you all, my expected time at the mechanic was spent working in the comfort of my Home Sweet Home.

I haven't been driving much due to the pandemic shutdowns and a back problem, however I knew that I needed my car's air conditioning fixed and I needed new brakes. A friend told me about CarCare To Go. They offer a valet service. So, I thought I would give them a try and I'm really glad I did. Erika with CarCare To Go kept in contact with me throughout the entire process via text and email. She and the team assessed the fixes that needed to happen, provided video and photos of their recommendations and I approved the ones I wanted to address. They fixed them and I had my car delivered back to me, ready to go, safe and clean. They even sanitized the inside of my car for me! What I really liked about this experience was that even though I wasn't face-to-face with them, they were in constant contact with me about the process and my car, they were clear when they provided videos and pictures of the mechanical issues, and I felt really taken care of. This service is definitely one that I will use again. Highly recommend.

This was my first time using CC2G/Ourisman Jeep of Bethesda, and it was a fantastic experience. The online booking and valet service went smoothly, and the work was completed in a timely manner. The best part of the experience was the communication with the service team. I knew going into the appointment I needed significant work done, so I definitely appreciated how straightforward everything was. The written estimate included a detailed breakout of the costs (for both labor and parts), pictures of the relevant parts & info about their functionality, and scaled recommendations about how soon something should be addressed. Everything was very transparent. The service team kept in touch throughout the process. If they said you'd hear from them by a certain time then they actually called you at that time. They also listened and engaged in conversation; they took my preferences and driving habits into account when making recommendations. And the detail was SUPERB! I checked all the nooks and hard to reach spots when my jeep was returned; the engine, under the seats, the air vents, the vanity mirror, even down into the under-floor jack storage - everything was immaculate and gleaming. Work Completed: - new radiator, hoses, & thermostat - replaced rear axel seals - oil change - detail

This is just the best car valet service I have ever used. They pick up the car when promised, return it when agreed and it is clean and shiny. No more having to drive to and wait for service. It could not be easier and the nicest people to deal with. I am happy to give it 5 Stars. Wish it could be more.

Carcaretogo did a wonderful job with taking my Subaru in for an oil change and tire rotation. They have speedy communication and have proven to be a trustworthy company. I was blown away with the free valet service, and the thorough communication I received. I first scheduled a valet service prior to a big snow storm. Since it was storming I decided to change my appointment and did not anticipate it to be an easy ordeal, but I was proven wrong with the ease of changing my appointment and communication on both ends- the valet service and dealership. Thank you for your great customer service!
